Hey there, friends and neighbors! I’m Ananeika Gordon, and if we haven’t met yet, I’m the CEO and Founder of Family ReBuild of New Jersey.

When we talk about "rebuilding" here at Family ReBuild, we aren’t just talking about bricks and mortar. We’re talking about lives, dignity, and that incredible feeling of security that comes from knowing you have a safe place to lay your head at night.

In our work across Camden, Burlington, and throughout South Jersey, we see families facing the unimaginable every day, sudden displacement due to fire, floods, or financial crisis. It’s heartbreaking to watch a family lose everything they’ve worked for in the blink of an eye. But today, I want to talk about a tool that can help protect you from that total loss. It’s something a lot of folks overlook because they think it’s too expensive or they don't think they need it.

I’m talking about renters insurance.

I know, I know, insurance isn't exactly the most "fun" topic to talk about on a Saturday morning. But stick with me, because this tiny investment can be the difference between a temporary setback and a total catastrophe.

The Biggest Myth: "My Landlord Has It Covered"

Let’s start with the biggest misunderstanding I hear from the families we serve. A lot of people believe that because their landlord has insurance on the building, they are protected if something goes wrong.

Friends, I wish that were true, but it’s a major misconception.

Your landlord’s insurance covers the building itself, the walls, the roof, the plumbing, and the structure. It does not cover the things inside your apartment. It doesn’t cover your couch, your TV, your clothes, your kids' toys, or that laptop you use for work. If a pipe bursts or a fire breaks out, the landlord’s insurance helps the landlord fix the building. It doesn't give you a dime to replace your bed or your refrigerator.

Even more importantly, the landlord’s insurance doesn’t provide you with a place to stay if the apartment becomes unlivable. This is where so many families in New Jersey find themselves at risk of displacement. Without your own policy, you’re often left on your own to figure out where to sleep that very night.

At Family ReBuild, we believe in rebuilding South Jersey together, and part of that is making sure you have the knowledge to protect yourself before a crisis hits.

Your Secret Weapon: Additional Living Expenses (ALE)

If you take away nothing else from this post, I want you to remember these three letters: ALE.

ALE stands for Additional Living Expenses. This is the part of a renters insurance policy that I am most passionate about because it directly prevents homelessness and displacement.

If your apartment is damaged by a "covered peril" (like a fire, a bad storm, or a burst pipe) and you literally cannot live there while it’s being fixed, ALE kicks in. It’s designed to help you maintain your normal standard of living even when you’re forced out of your home.

Here is what ALE typically covers:

For the families we work with, the hidden cost of displacement is often what makes recovery so hard. Having ALE coverage means you don't have to choose between a meal and a roof over your head during a crisis. It provides the breathing room you need to stay on your feet while you figure out your next steps.

"Ananeika, I Can't Afford Another Bill!"

I hear you. I really do. Life in New Jersey is expensive, and many of us are already stretched thin. When you’re trying to make ends meet, the last thing you want to hear about is another monthly payment.

But here is the good news: Renters insurance is incredibly affordable.

In New Jersey, a solid renters insurance policy usually costs between $15 and $30 a month.

Think about that for a second. That’s about the price of one large pizza delivery or a few fancy coffees. For the price of a couple of movie tickets, you get thousands of dollars in protection for your belongings and a safety net for your housing.

When we look at the family assistance programs in New Jersey, we always recommend renters insurance as a primary "self-defense" tool. It is much easier to pay $20 a month now than it is to try and find $2,000 for a security deposit and first month's rent on a new place if your current home is destroyed.

Depending on where you live, whether it’s Burlington County, Camden County, or Bergen County, your rates might even be lower than the average. Some companies even offer basic plans for as little as $5 to $10 if you bundle it with your car insurance.

Beyond Your Stuff: Liability Protection

There’s one more piece of the puzzle that makes renters insurance a "no-brainer." It’s called Liability Protection.

Accidents happen. Maybe your dog gets a little too excited and bites a visitor. Maybe a guest trips over a rug in your living room and hurts their ankle. Or maybe you accidentally leave the bathtub running and it leaks through the floor, damaging the neighbor’s ceiling below you.

In these cases, you could be held legally and financially responsible for the medical bills or the repairs. Renters insurance protects you from these "what if" moments. It covers the costs so that one mistake doesn’t lead to a lawsuit that wipes out your savings or leads to your displacement.

We talk a lot about why dignity first is the secret ingredient to rebuilding lives. Part of that dignity is having the confidence that you are protected against the unexpected. You deserve that peace of mind.

How to Get Started (It’s Easier Than You Think!)

If you don’t have renters insurance yet, don't worry, you can get covered in about 15 minutes. Here’s a quick "Action Plan" to get you moving:

  1. Take a Quick Inventory: Walk through your home and take photos or a video of your things. You don't need a fancy spreadsheet. Just show your electronics, your furniture, and your clothes. This helps if you ever need to make a claim.
  2. Get a Quote: You can go online to any major insurance provider. Most of them have a "Renters Insurance" section where you just plug in your zip code and a few details about your apartment.
  3. Ask for Discounts: If you have an auto insurance policy, ask to "bundle" them. You might find that adding renters insurance barely changes your total monthly bill because of the multi-policy discount!
  4. Check the ALE Limit: When you’re looking at quotes, make sure you see how much "Loss of Use" or "Additional Living Expense" coverage is included. You want to make sure it’s enough to cover a hotel for at least a month or two if needed.

Why We’re Sharing This

At Family ReBuild of New Jersey, our mission is to empower you. We want to see every family in our community thriving, stable, and secure. We know that displacement is one of the most traumatic things a family can go through. Insurance is a proactive way to build a wall around your family’s future. It’s about taking control of what you can in an unpredictable world.

If you’re currently facing a housing crisis or are worried about displacement, please know that you aren’t alone. We have resources ranging from crisis counseling to emergency resources to help you navigate these tough times.

We are so grateful for this community and for the supporters who allow us to do this work. If you’d like to learn more about how we’re making a difference, or if you want to get involved yourself, we’d love to have you.

Remember, you are worth the investment. Your peace of mind is worth $20 a month. You’ve worked hard for everything you have: let’s make sure you get to keep it.

Stay safe, stay covered, and let’s keep rebuilding together!

Warmly,
