At Family ReBuild of New Jersey, we know that life can move fast, and sometimes it moves in directions we didn’t plan for. One day things are okay, and the next, you’re staring at an empty fridge, wondering how you’re going to feed your children or yourself. We want you to hear this loud and clear: You are not alone, and there is absolutely no shame in asking for a helping hand.
In fact, seeking help is an act of strength. It’s an act of love for your family. Our community is built on the idea that we lift each other up. Whether you are facing a temporary setback or a long-term challenge, New Jersey has systems in place to make sure you and your loved ones stay fed, healthy, and strong.
If you’re feeling the weight of food insecurity today, take a deep breath. We’ve put together this guide to help you navigate the resources available in our state. Here are five clear steps to getting food assistance fast.
1. Locate Your Nearest Food Pantry or Soup Kitchen for Immediate Help
When your stomach is growling and the cupboards are bare, you don’t have weeks to wait for an application to be processed. You need food now. For immediate relief, your local food pantries and soup kitchens are your best first stop.
In New Jersey, we are fortunate to have a massive network of emergency feeding organizations. These are often run by neighbors, churches, and community leaders who genuinely care about your well-being. Many of these locations provide "no-questions-asked" emergency bags of groceries to help you get through the next few days.

To find the one closest to you, you can visit the Community Food Bank of New Jersey’s "Find Food" tool. There are six major Emergency Feeding Organizations that cover different regions across the state. Whether you are in Burlington County, Newark, or down in Atlantic City, there is a distribution point nearby.
When you go, don't feel nervous. You’ll likely see faces from the neighborhood, people who understand exactly what you’re going through. These centers are designed to uphold your dignity. Most will simply ask for a form of ID or proof of residency, but even if you don't have those items on hand, many will still find a way to help you in an emergency.
2. Check Your Eligibility Online with NJHelps
Once you’ve handled the immediate need for a meal, it’s time to look at more sustainable, long-term support. The state of New Jersey has made this much easier through a portal called NJHelps.
Instead of calling five different offices, you can go to one website to see if you qualify for several different programs at once. This includes:
- SNAP (Food stamps)
- General Assistance (Cash assistance)
- NJ FamilyCare (Health insurance)
The NJHelps tool is private and quick. You’ll answer a few questions about your household size and your income, and it will give you a good idea of what programs you should apply for. We highly recommend doing this first because it saves you the frustration of filling out a long application for a program you might not qualify for.

3. Apply for SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program)
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, better known as SNAP, is the most effective tool we have to fight hunger. It provides you with a monthly benefit on an electronic card (similar to a debit card) that you can use at most grocery stores and even some farmers' markets.

Applying for SNAP is a game-changer because it gives you the power to choose the foods that are right for your family’s culture, health needs, and preferences. Here is how you can apply:
- Online: This is the fastest way. Head over to NJSNAP.gov and follow the prompts.
- In-Person: You can visit your County Social Service Agency. Sometimes, talking to a person face-to-face can help if your situation is complicated.
- Mail: You can download the application, print it, and mail it in if you don't have reliable internet access.
Income limits for SNAP are updated every October, and in recent years, New Jersey has expanded these limits to help even more working families. Even if you have a job, you may still qualify if your income falls within the guidelines. Don't assume you make "too much" until you check!
4. Don’t Forget About WIC (Women, Infants, and Children)
If you are pregnant, have recently given birth, are breastfeeding, or have children under the age of five, the WIC program is specifically designed for you.
WIC is more than just food; it’s a health and nutrition program. They provide vouchers for specific, healthy foods like milk, eggs, cereal, juice, and infant formula. But they also offer nutrition education, breastfeeding support, and referrals to other healthcare providers.
A lot of people ask us, "Can I get SNAP and WIC at the same time?" The answer is a resounding YES. If you qualify for both, you should absolutely use both. These programs are meant to work together to ensure that the youngest members of our community get the nutrients they need to grow up healthy and strong.
At Family ReBuild of New Jersey, we believe that investing in our mothers and children is the best way to rebuild our community. When a child has a full stomach, they can focus in school. When a mother isn't stressed about formula, she can focus on her family's future.
5. Get Help from a SNAP Navigator
We know that paperwork can be overwhelming, especially when you’re already stressed. If the applications feel like too much, or if you’ve been denied in the past and don't understand why, you don’t have to do it alone.
New Jersey has SNAP Navigators in every county. These are trained professionals whose entire job is to help you through the application process. They can help you gather your documents, explain the rules, and make sure your application is submitted correctly.

Having a navigator is like having a coach in your corner. They understand the system and can advocate for you. To find a navigator in your area, you can contact your local county social services or look for community-based non-profits that partner with the state.
Rebuilding Our Community Together
At Family ReBuild of New Jersey, our mission is rooted in the belief that every person deserves dignity and security. We see the brilliance and the potential in our Black and Brown communities, and we know that sometimes, a little bit of support is all it takes to spark a massive transformation.
Hunger isn't just a lack of food; it's a barrier to opportunity. When we work together to remove that barrier, we open up doors for education, employment, and joy.
How You Can Make a Difference
If you aren't in need of food assistance yourself, we invite you to be a part of the solution. Our work depends on the generosity of people like you who believe in the power of community.
