At Family ReBuild of New Jersey, we believe that no family should ever have to worry about where their next meal is coming from, especially when they are already navigating the challenges of displacement or disaster recovery. We know that rebuilding your life starts with the basics, and nothing is more basic or more essential than food.

When you’re facing a crisis, the stress can make even the simplest tasks feel overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together this straightforward guide. Whether you’ve been affected by a house fire, a flood, or a sudden financial hardship in South Jersey, we want you to know that help is available right now.

This post is Day 4 of our 5-day series focused on practical resources for our community. If you missed our previous guides, be sure to check out our Quick-Start Guide to Rent Assistance in NJ. Today, we are focusing on emergency food assistance New Jersey programs that help families rebuild with the dignity they deserve.

You Are Not Alone in This Journey

Before we dive into the steps, we want to remind you that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. In New Jersey, thousands of families use these programs every day to bridge the gap during tough times. Our mission at Family ReBuild of New Jersey is to move families from displacement to dignity, and providing a path to food security is a huge part of that.

Step 1: Connect with NJ 211 – Your Immediate Resource Locator

The very first thing you should do if you are hungry or your pantry is empty is dial 2-1-1. This is New Jersey’s statewide helpline for all social services. It is free, confidential, and available 24/7.

When you call, a specialist can help you find emergency food assistance New Jersey programs specifically in your neighborhood.

This service connects you to over 500 food programs across the state, including those offering fresh groceries and prepared meals. If you’re in Burlington County or South Jersey, they can pinpoint the pantries closest to your current location.

Step 2: Locate a Local Food Pantry or Soup Kitchen

While state programs take a little time to process, local food pantries and soup kitchens are designed for immediate needs. Many of these locations operate with a "no questions asked" policy for your first visit to ensure you and your children are fed today.

Many modern pantries in NJ have moved toward a "Client Choice" model. This means instead of being handed a pre-packed bag, you get to shop the shelves for the items your family actually likes and eats. This is a small but vital way to maintain dignity during the rebuilding process.

Pro-Tip: Some pantries require a form of ID or proof of residency (like a utility bill), so it’s always a good idea to bring those along if you have them. If you’ve lost your documents in a disaster, don't let that stop you, most organizations will still help you while you work on recovering your paperwork.

Step 3: Contact Your County’s Emergency Feeding Organization (EFO)

New Jersey is organized into regions, and each region is served by a major food bank known as an Emergency Feeding Organization. These organizations are the powerhouses that supply local pantries. If you need more significant help or want to know about large-scale distribution events, contact the one serving your county:

These organizations are vital parts of the family assistance programs New Jersey network. They often have mobile markets that bring fresh produce directly into underserved neighborhoods.

Step 4: Apply for SNAP and WIC for Long-Term Stability

Once the immediate hunger is addressed, it’s time to look at long-term food security. SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), formerly known as food stamps, provides monthly benefits on an EBT card that you can use at most grocery stores and even some farmers' markets.

If you have children under 5 or are pregnant/breastfeeding, you should also apply for WIC (Women, Infants, and Children). WIC provides specific healthy foods, nutrition education, and breastfeeding support.

You can check your eligibility and apply for both online at NJHelps.gov. This portal is a "one-stop-shop" where you can also see if you qualify for cash assistance or health insurance.

For many families we work with, navigating these applications can feel like a lot. If you need someone to talk to about the stress of these transitions, remember that crisis counseling is often just as important as physical resources.

Step 5: Lean on Your Community and Family ReBuild

At Family ReBuild of New Jersey, we are more than just a resource list. We are a community of neighbors helping neighbors. We understand that food insecurity is often just one piece of the puzzle. When a family is displaced, they might also need help with rebuilding their credit, finding stable housing, or simply feeling seen and heard.
